Nvidia today unveiled its first software-and infrastructure-as-a-service offering, Nvidia Omniverse Cloud. It is a collection of cloud services for designers, developers, and enterprise teams that will help them create, publish, run, and experience metaverse applications from any location.
Wherever the users may be, the technology takes advantage of the cloud to access the robust power of data centers and make Omniverse features available. Currently, Omniverse is used by more than 700 businesses and 200,000 individuals.
Using Omniverse Cloud, individuals and teams can design and collaborate on 3D workflows in a single click without needing local computing power. The Omniverse Cloud will use Nvidia’s cloud gaming platform GeForce, which has a global graphics delivery network.
Richard Kerris, vice president of the Omniverse at Nvidia, said, “The next evolution of the internet called the metaverse would be extended with 3D. Now to understand what the impact of that is going to be, the traditional internet that we know today connects websites described in HTML and viewed through a browser. The metaverse is going to be the evolution of that internet connecting virtual 3D worlds using USD, or universal scene description.”
He added, “Think of it as the HTML of 3D that can be viewed to a real-time virtual simulation engine. This means you’ll be able to interact with 3D objects and experience virtually things like that. It doesn’t mean that everybody’s going to be like Ready Player One, with the helmets and all. That’s simply a mechanism for experiencing things. It means that every device that you have today that interacts with the web will be able to interact with 3D, and that’s going to be game-changing.”
Roboticists are now more scalable and accessible to train, simulate, test, and deploy AI-enabled intelligent robots. Autonomous vehicle engineers can produce physically based sensor data and simulate traffic situations to test various road and weather conditions for safe self-driving deployment. Omniverse Cloud is based on the open Universal Scene Description (USD) standard for an interoperable 3D asset.
Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, said, “The metaverse, the 3D internet, connects virtual 3D worlds described in USD and viewed through a simulation engine. With Omniverse in the cloud, we can connect teams worldwide to design, build, and operate virtual worlds and digital twins.”
World leaders back Omniverse Cloud
RIMAC Group, WPP, and Siemens are some of the early supporters of Omniverse Cloud. WPP is the biggest marketing services organization that is adopting Omniverse Cloud fully. Developers, creators, and businesses worldwide are using Nvidia Omniverse to build virtual worlds and expand the bounds of the metaverse.
Omniverse is a scalable computing platform for full-design-fidelity 3D simulation processes that developers from various international sectors utilize to build the 3D internet. It is based on Universal Scene Description (USD), a virtual world language initially developed by Pixar.
Nvidia revealed the most comprehensive set of new Omniverse capabilities at the recent GTC presentation, including managed services and container deployments on the Omniverse Cloud, new developer toolkits, and an open developer publishing portal.
With the help of these most recent updates and features, developers can easily create, expand, and connect 3D tools and platforms to the Omniverse ecosystem.
Using the cloud to create and run metaverse apps
The first SaaS product from Nvidia, Omniverse Cloud, is an infrastructure-as-a-service that links Omniverse applications running on edge devices, on-premises, or in the cloud. Omniverse Nucleus Cloud allows users to access and edit shared virtual worlds, while Omniverse Farm enables users to scale 3D workloads across the cloud. Users can also create and collaborate on any device using the Omniverse App Streaming functionality.
Omniverse Cloud is run on the planetary-scale Omniverse Cloud Computer. It is powered by Nvidia OVX and HGX systems to simulate virtual worlds with abundant visuals and run powerful AI workloads.
According to Nvidia CEO Huang, Omniverse will be used by the biggest industries, including retail, consumer and luxury products, supply chain, logistics, and more, to connect their teams, display their data in full detail, produce synthetic data to train AI models, and simulate digital twins. According to him, the foundations include OVX servers, Nvidia GPUs, and RTX graphics.
According to Kerris, several metaverse applications are already there and are expanding quickly. Fashion designers, furniture manufacturers, and stores already offer virtual 3D products that you may try out with augmented reality.
“And we are building a digital twin of the Earth to predict the climate decades into the future,” said Kerris. “Omniverse is like nothing that’s ever been built before. It is a platform for building and operating metaverse applications on a real-time large-scale 3D database, a computing platform that enables 3D designers and teams to connect better and build existing 3D pipelines that operate virtual worlds simulations.”
Nvidia has developed its Omniverse applications, including Drive to test autonomous vehicles, Omniverse Replicator to generate synthetic data, and Isaac Sim to test robots. There are a variety of other apps as well. Lowes is using Magic Leap 2’s augmented reality to allow warehouse workers to work efficiently by seeing visual prompts in the warehouse while wearing the Magic Leap 2 AR glasses.
A new Nvidia OVX platform with newly unveiled GPUs will power Omniverse. For Omniverse, Nvidia has 150 partners. Deutsche Bahn, the second-largest transport corporation in the world and operator of the national railway in Germany, is using this service to maximize capacity utilization.
