GitLab Inc., a DevOps software development company, announced the release of its software development platform with features that will help companies improve their cybersecurity, construct machine studying purposes and extra simply troubleshoot errors.
The new features will be made available steadily. The company will introduce a few features today, while others will be available next year.
The San Francisco-based company offers a platform that allows enterprises to manage their software development projects.
Initially, the platform focused on helping developers manage the code files that incorporate an application. Over time, GitLab added additional features to automate various related operations, including testing code for security vulnerabilities, deploying software to production, and detecting application errors.
GitLab went public last October and its customers include a list of large enterprises such as Nvidia Corp., Siemens AG, and others.
With this new platform, GitLab will help organizations enhance the company value proposition in several areas. One such particular focus area is cybersecurity.
Companies scan their applications for vulnerabilities using a method known as dynamic application security testing, or DAST. This method involves launching simulated cyber attacks against an application to check if it may be vulnerable to hacking.
GitLab is replacing the open-source DAST tools that its platform had previously used for the task with a proprietary engine meant to deliver greater performance and more configurable possibilities.
GitLab is also introducing a number of other cybersecurity measures. The company intends to provide a feature that can automatically compile a list of all the software components in an application, making cybersecurity evaluations easier. Furthermore, GitLab will allow developers to host the code they produce as part of a software development project in a secure cloud environment rather than on a local machine, reducing the danger of cyberattacks.
Machine learning models are increasingly being used by companies to power their features. GitLab aims to handle this use case more directly with the newly-announced platform upgrades.
Further plans of GitLab include introducing a tool that will let developers create different versions of a Machine Learning model, compare them and find out which is most effective. The other new upcoming feature will ease the task of managing the datasets that a software team uses to train neural networks. The feature will facilitate moving training data from external systems to GitLab’s platform.
“In today’s highly competitive landscape, organizations are under more pressure than ever to deliver software faster and more securely,” said David DeSanto, Vice President of Product at GitLab. “GitLab solves this problem with The One DevOps Platform. Organizations can do away with their do-it-yourself DevOps toolchains.”
Some of the new features in GitLab’s platform are based on technologies acquired through the acquisition of startup Opstrace Inc. last year. Opstrace developed an open-source solution that can be used to troubleshoot application issues. GitLab is adding new capabilities that will make it easier for developers to evaluate various sorts of error data, such as metrics, logs, and traces, as part of troubleshooting efforts.
GitLab is also introducing a slew of new features as part of the update. Some of the new capabilities are intended to ease software bug identification and other routine duties. In contrast, other additional features focus on more specialized tasks, such as ensuring that an application project adheres to a company’s internal cybersecurity best practices.
