Japanese heavyweight NTT has turned up with an idea to bring out synchronized machine learning (ML) on numerous edge servers.

It is the same as an artificial neural network or blockchain, wherein it is a consensus algorithm where a consortium of disseminated servers – each one crunching information individually – share what they have ‘learned’ with one another to generate a single version.

This means that NTT’s ML application operating on server A could be trained with one set of data, whereas server B could be trained with another set, but the conclusion of both the servers is the same regarding how to analyze that information.

The process is asynchronous, so it does not depend on each server operating the ML component at the same moment or being in continuous interaction with one another. This may have several benefits for telcos.

“In recent machine learning, especially deep learning, data are aggregated in a single place and a model is trained in the single place,” explained NTT, in a statement. “However, in the IoT era, where everything is connected to networks, aggregating vast amounts of data on the cloud is complicated.”

Additionally, “More and more people are demanding that data be held on a local server/device due to privacy issues. Legal regulations have also been enacted to guarantee data privacy, including the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR),” NTT said.

Also, there is an advantage of lower latency that arrives while installing an ML module at the edge of the network, nearer to the consumer. NTT will continue to study what it has dubbed “edge-consensus learning” to make it commercially available.
