Rafay Systems, a leading platform supplier for Kubernetes Operations, recently announced that MoneyGram had chosen the Rafay Kubernetes Operations Platform (KOP) as its Kubernetes provider and Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its global cloud provider. Through these connections, MoneyGram is developing a Kubernetes operations practice that is best in class and is advancing its infrastructure modernization and cloud-native application development projects.

MoneyGram, which powered cross-border money transfers, has started a digital transformation program to quickly advance its business model and provide cutting-edge financial solutions that unite communities around the globe. The company desired an integrated solution that took into account the “techops” lifecycle, according to Joe Vaughan, CTO of MoneyGram.

He asserted that administering Kubernetes without the proper tools and overlays is a difficult endeavor because Kubernetes is capable of much more than just scaling and maintaining high availability.

According to Vaughan, given the complexity of the Kubernetes environment, MoneyGram looked for a solution that would enable quick and automated action while allowing personnel to perform other activities. He claimed that – thanks to the Rafay/AWS solution – his firm could reduce complexity and operational pressures when it transitioned skill sets and technology to the cloud.

According to co-founder and CEO of Rafay Systems, Haseeb Budhani, the Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) team at AWS and Rafay have a close working connection. The team advises Rafay to make decisions on product capabilities that benefit EKS users like MoneyGram.

Vaughan claims the business initially considered open-source alternatives but rapidly discovered it was challenging to maintain the microservices’ individual parts without a Kubernetes platform. Being a container orchestration solution, Kubernetes is best suited for automating microservice application management, deployment, and scaling. Organizations can use it to manage thousands of containers at once. This, according to Vaughan, led to MoneyGram adopting Kubernetes and moving the business to the cloud.

MoneyGram claimed that it was able to create a completely functional Kubernetes operations practice utilizing Rafay and AWS and standardize on Amazon EKS. As a result, users now have access to Kubernetes’ flexibility and the security, scalability, and resilience of a fully managed AWS service.

What Moneygram will gain from Rafay and Amazon EKS

MoneyGram has created a fully operational Kubernetes operations practice in less than three months by utilizing Rafay and AWS, and was able to do the following:

  • Adopt Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) as a go-to solution: By choosing Amazon EKS, MoneyGram can benefit from Kubernetes’ flexibility as well as the security, scalability, and resilience of a fully managed AWS service.
  • Standardize Cluster and Environment: MoneyGram now has a simpler method to define and manage clusters and environments to be defined centrally and managed across numerous internal teams and across AWS regions.
  • Secure and Control Developer Access: MoneyGram now has greater control over the developer and operator access to Kubernetes infrastructure, with easier isolation boundary management between development teams, along with central auditing of all developer and operator activity.
  • Lower Kubernetes Management Overhead: MoneyGram’s Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team can now focus on higher-value product innovation activities rather than continually dealing with Kubernetes management complexity thanks to the Rafay platform.

“It is incredible to see how fast a company can accelerate along its path to modernization by moving to the cloud and standardizing on Kubernetes,” said Haseeb Budhani. “MoneyGram’s teams are deploying more applications in AWS faster than ever before, and we could not be prouder of the collaboration between the three companies as we work to play a small role in MoneyGram’s continued success.”

“Customers around the globe are modernizing their applications faster with Amazon EKS,” said Barry Cooks, Vice President, Kubernetes at AWS. “We are excited to work with Rafay to help MoneyGram streamline their Kubernetes operations so that they can focus on what matters most—delivering innovative products to their end-users.”
