Today’s businesses depend on speed and agility to generate revenue growth. The IT organization must meet the speed requirements of the business, but it must also provide highly reliable systems that fit within budget guidelines. To satisfy business needs within the operational constraints of IT, all-flash storage is becoming increasingly popular. All-flash systems can be quickly deployed into a traditional infrastructure environment and used to accelerate a variety of enterprise applications. This document compares two popular all-flash solutions available today: NetApp AFF and the latest iteration of Dell EMC’s flash-based XtremIO product line, known as X2. The X2 is built upon clustered storage bricks, each of which contains a pair of storage controllers and SSD devices. It is available in configurations with up to eight flash storage controllers per cluster, with higher brick counts expected to be supported in the future.
