According to a recent blog post, Google Search is getting a new upgrade that will prioritize original material and repel clickbait.

In the following weeks, changes to search will focus on information generated by spam websites or bots meant to manipulate SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization. Instead, Google will prioritize highlighting original reporting and content that was “made by and for people.” According to Google, this Search upgrade would be similar to the reviews update it implemented earlier this year. That update gave more weight to product reviews written by professionals than sites that provided a summary of several products. Google will work to improve its search results for content related to education, entertainment, retail, and technology.

People have shown themselves to be increasingly irritated over the lack of quality search results, which led to the introduction of the update to search. Many discussions on Reddit have pointed to a decline in the quality of search results and an increase in the number of advertisements and sponsored posts. Bloggers and online media like The Atlantic have pointed the finger at websites continually trying to optimize their content for Google as the cause of poor results. Google’s dominance in search is being challenged by Bing, DuckDuckGo, and other search engines, although the business continues to have a market share of 91%.

In 2020, the Department of Justice initiated an antitrust action against Google due to the company’s claimed efforts to stifle competition and maintain its dominant position in the search market. In the latter part of that year, 38 attorneys general from state and territorial governments filed an antitrust action against Google, saying that the company holds a monopoly in the search market. In response, Google asserted that the company’s success is due to the superior quality of its search offering. The litigation is currently making its way through the various stages of the legal process.
