As part of their exploration of new business models, many power utilities are looking at unregulated services as a potentially attractive way to generate new revenues. These include a range of possible consumer, business, carrier and city government services that can take advantage of a fiber infrastructure, and a utility’s critical communications and grid operations skills. The variety of options for any given utility will depend in part on the country in which they are operating, due to the impact of government policies, local economic conditions and the competitive environment. This document will focus specifically on new service opportunities that leverage utility-owned fiber infrastructure.
