Equinix, a leading provider of on-demand colocation data centers, recently disclosed a security breach in a short statement published on its website. The company said that the ransomware was found on the internal systems; however, the core of customer-facing services were not affected. The details of the attack are not available.
Also, there weren’t any outages reported and comments on the company hiding the incident. There is no wave of customer complaints flooding social media.
Now, Equinix has just added to the long list of ransomware incidents that have impacted web hostings and data center providers. The list already has CyrusOne, Cognizant, A2 Hosting, SmarterASP.NET, Dataresolution.net, and Internet Nayana in it.
The target of the ransomware gang is quite clear that is to bring down the services of the companies and affect the customer base, which can cause an immediate effect on the companies. Such threats can put pressure on the data center or the web hosting provider to restore services right away, which might be possible by paying a heavy ransom demand.
Company’s statement
“Equinix is currently investigating a security incident we detected that involves ransomware on some of our internal systems,” the company said in a statement.
“Our teams took immediate and decisive action to address the incident, notified law enforcement and are continuing to investigate. Our data centers and our service offerings, including managed services, remain fully operational, and the incident has not affected our ability to support our customers.
Note that as most customers operate their own equipment within Equinix data centers, this incident has had no impact on their operations or the data on their equipment at Equinix. The security of the data in our systems is always a top priority and we intend to take all necessary actions, as appropriate, based on the results of our investigation.”
The severity and extent of the attack are unknown, but we will come up with the updated story as we find out more in this regard.
