In 2019, the world witnessed the start of 5G networks, and as the year progressed the 5G networks and services were deployed faster than expected. It is witnessed that by the end of the year 2019, 348 global operators invested in 5G networks, from which 61 have commercially launched the 5G services. The anticipation was that, in the 5G era, consumers will enjoy better experience and benefit from the new wave of application innovation. The 5G network will improve our lives by bringing a new set of opportunities, including smart port, smart manufacturing, and likewise.
Now that the idea of 5G Deterministic Networking (5GDN) is comprehensively introduced, the release of the network opens wide a new chapter for 5G development and promotes the development of network applications while putting 5G at the center of industry digitalization.
Now, Know What Lies Ahead? A Massive Industry’s Digital Transformation.
A study was conducted by Keystone Strategy and amp; Huawei SPO Lab, which states that investment in industry digital transformation is going up year after year. Talking in numbers, the year 2025 will witness 5G markets to be worth USD 1.6 trillion or more, of which the 50% will be shared between the mobile operators. The forecast also shows that the market value of 5G connectivity applications will reach USD 232 billion while the market value will shoot up to USD 370 billion.
The 5G Deterministic Networking: the three key dimensioning
Looking at the analysis and practice of more than 100 application scenarios in more than 10 industries, the requirement of a 5G network can be divided into three dimensions, namely, differentiated network with orchestrated capabilities, dedicated network that talks about data security, and DIY networks. 5GDN is the key to the industry’s digital transformation. Therefore, it will be good to say that 5G deterministic networking is based on these three major dimensions.
In other words, 5GDN leverages resources to build manageable and deterministic virtual private mobile networks providing customers predictable and exceptional service experience.
The emphasis is also on the point that Core Network (CN) is the key for network topology, resource scheduling, service orchestration, and E2E service experience management. In addition to it, the Core Network provides the deterministic experience of service application, which ultimately helps the RAN for improving deterministic capabilities. Thus, CN is probably the core of 5GDN. And to solve the technical requirement, the operators can plan and build 5GDN based on characteristics, namely, Cloud Native, One Core, Real-Time Operations, and Edge Computing. The solution further helps in accelerating the commercial launch of 5G, delivering a superior service experience to individuals and all-sized enterprises.
Cloud-native
Unlike the traditional private line market, the Cloud Native-based 5G mobile network could be transmuted into a private network based on cloud-based flexible resource orchestration and mobility. Cloud-native provides the container technologies and micro-service making the entire network more reliable and service deployment more agile.
Real-time operation
As dynamic network slicing is implemented on 5GDN, it requires complete automation in network deployment, provisioning, and other processes. The work order-based processing on traditional networks can’t do justice to the industry services. Therefore, the concept of portal mode is put to use so that industries can efficiently handle the processing.
One core
5GDN is an access core supporting all the Radio Access Technologies (RATs). Add to it, some of the industrial applications are highly dependent on voice and SMS services. The company, Huawei has launched the Single Voice Core solution to provide voice services for 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G subscribers. The solution works brilliantly as it helps in integration of different voice network, expand voice services, and build voice infra.
Edge computing
5GDN uses Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) to deliver exceptional connectivity and SLA guarantee to the industries and large scale enterprises. For instance, operators can provide the “connectivity machine vision” proficiency for manufacturing, “connectivity video rendering” capability for media live streaming, and the “connectivity fleet management” feature for smart transportation.
The deployment of 5GDN cannot happen in a single phase. For many operators, the 5G deployment is an early stage, and it is not mature enough to support the wide deployment. Therefore, it is suggested to the operators to opt for the right industries and keep up with the pace of network planning for the deployment of 5GDN. Also, due to the lack of complete 5G network coverage, MEC is used for the deployment of 5GDNs in the independent areas, such as enterprise campuses and harbors.
In terms of application scenarios, 5GDN should be deployed where entertainment videos and media live streaming takes place.
Global practices on 5GDN are blooming
In 2019, the 5GDN has been piloted in many places around the world. Majorly, the operators, industry vendors, and telecom equipment providers of the Chinese market have conducted in-depth research and achieved noticeable results. It shows the credibility and the true worth of 5GDN applications across many industries. Additionally, 5GDN demonstrates application in smart port, smart grid, smart manufacturing, and technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality.
Final thought
From the above illustration, it is clear that 5G brings up value additions and opportunities to various industries, and especially the telecom industry. 5GDN will support the operators in maximizing the value of network connection and drive digital transformation within the industry. The 3GPP has defined the basic framework of 5GDN and functions related to deterministic capabilities. All business and parties should explore and promote the “CORE” concept in actual deployment to experience a dedicated and DIY 5GDN.
